If you own a garage it might be time to think about your lighting strategy. Whether you use it as a place for extra storage, parking the car or as a workshop its important to make sure there is sufficient lighting. Below are a few expert tips for helping you to get the most out of your garage lighting.

Entry point

You don’t want to be fumbling around in the dark, so you need to have a good source of lighting at the garage entry point. Motion activated lights are ideal as it means that even with your hands full you’ll be able to see where you’re going, and you’ll avoid tripping or falling over steps and obstructions.

Cabinets

Garages are a great place to store things like garden chemicals or detergents. It might also be an area for odds and ends that don’t have a place inside the home. Cabinet lighting doesn’t need to be expensive so simple LED strips would probably suffice in this instance. You could also install track lighting if you wanted to be a little more fancy.

Overhead

Probably the most important source of lighting as it needs to illuminate the whole garage. Fluorescent light fixtures are the most common for the garage, mainly as they’re bright, cost effective and long lasting. If you don’t have a large space then you could fit a standard ceiling light which would work just as well.

Working

If you use your garage as a workshop then you need to have good task lighting, especially if you’re going to be working with power tools or handling sharp objects. A flexible clip on lamp is one way to achieve task lighting as it will give you the flexibility to move it around to suit your needs.

Outside

Garages are seen by many thieves as opportunistic areas to target, as more often than not they are dark and secluded.  Fitting a security light to the outside is a must. Alarms and strong locks might be enough to stop intruders from getting in but a security light will deter them from even trying.
