7 lighting mistakes to avoid in the home
Lighting your home is not as easy as you think. Sometimes putting a bulb in or moving a lamp around is not enough to gain the desired lighting effect. Below are 7 lighting mistakes to avoid.
Dim it down
Not installing a dimmer switch means you won’t have control over the mood and atmosphere. Ambient light is perfect for the dining room but not if the light is too harsh.
Shadow effect
Knowing where to place your lights is important. Install them in the wrong spot and there is a danger you’ll cast unnecessary shadows. Bathroom lighting is the prime example. Avoid this by situating wall scones either side of the bathroom mirror not directly above it.
Size does matter
A common lighting mistake is having fittings which look disproportionate to the rest of the home. Make sure you measure the area and light before hand. A small chandelier hanging over a large table will look totally out of place.
Positioning
In the kitchen pendant lights should be 30 to 36 inches above the island. You don’t want your line of vision obstructed by a low hanging light. Similarly, table lamps should be set shoulder height so you’re not blinded by the bulb.
Paint job
Consider the colour of your walls when it comes to achieving the right balance of light. If the walls are too dark it will have a negative effect on the room. Look for lighter shades of the same colour if you want to avoid any drastic changes.
Energy saving
You’re using the wrong light bulbs. While CFL and LED bulbs cost more they will save you money in the long run. Also consider certain light fittings will require a different bulb to fit with their surroundings.
Layers
Think of lighting your home in layers. Many home owners don’t and find they have too much over head light. Include task and ambient light such as table lamps and floor lights so you create a balanced lighting effect.
